English 2B

Based on student feedback from RateMyProfessors.com, here are the ratings for the English professors teaching ENGL F001B at Foothill College:

  • Suzy J. Quezada: Overall Quality: 1.5/5 (based on 2 ratings). Students mention that she is a tough grader and that assignments are graded late.

  • Jordana F. Griffiths: Overall Quality: 3.8/5 (based on 5 ratings). Students appreciate her organized lectures and prompt feedback but note a heavy workload.

  • Sherri D. Harvey: Overall Quality: 3.8/5 (based on 5 ratings). Students describe her as nice, with assignments related to sustainability, involving group work and projects.

  • Amber A. La Piana: No ratings available.

  • Brian C. Lewis: 4.3/5

  • ENGL 1A in fall 2022 and ENGL 1B in winter 2023. Both classes were really informative and expanded my writing skills. Interesting readings and good class structure. It could get a little disorganized but anyone familiar with Canvas should have no problem. Main complaint would be the professor. He was somewhat rude and not very present. Extra credit

  • The organization was so confusing. The class is entirely on science fiction and the questions are difficult to answer. It's easy to pass but honestly too much work for a GE english class. 5 essays 1 reflective final
  • I took ENGL 1A and ENGL 1B Class was interesting. 5 papers, discussions, final, extra credit Professor was really rude, sarcastic, and degrading Leaves feedback but in emails or office hours he can get annoyed and disrespectful. Slow grader. When I asked about not seeing a grade for one of my early essays at the end he "pushed me to the back"
  • Brian Lewis is overall a great teacher, but I will say get ready to write a lot. Those who leave negative reviews were just probably not ready to try in a college level English class. While some writings are hard, you will ultimately leave the class a much better writer and you won't regret the hard work you put into the class.
  • Professor Lewis runs a challenging but rewarding class. The sci-fi focus is engaging, and his feedback is invaluable. Stay organized, use unstuck AI for study prep, and you'll do well. Not an easy A, but worth the effort.
  • Joanna E. Banach: No ratings available.

  • Benjamin P. Armerding: 4/5

  • Gives WAY TOO MUCH homework in a week and way too many discussion posts. Essays are due every two weeks. Does not care about students' well-being AT ALL. has extreme policies for AI -- do not use chatGPT or Grammarly.

  • His class made me like English again. There's a lot of homework but it all builds to the essays so it makes things easier. I don't know about all students, but he was prompt responding to emails and gave me A TON of feedback on my essays. He's strict about AI so don't take him if that's your thing. Topics are really interesting.
  • I emailed the prof. about attending his office hours as syllabus says hybrid, showed up in person, and was told he was not there, I emailed him again to inform him why our talk was delayed. He proceeded to tell me that it was "unfortunate" that I asked about his "office" and not "tutoring" hours. English prof. who does not know how to communicate?!
  • There is so much homework in this class, and much of it is busy work. He uses Turnitin to grade every essay, causing many students to be wrongly accused of using ChatGPT/AI. The rubrics for essays can also be misleading because they don't cover everything he wants to see in an essay. If he cared about his students, he wouldn't be as harsh.
  • The professor responds promptly to emails and is flexible with scheduling. However, the workload is excessive. I wanted to invest genuine thought into my writing, but that's nearly impossible. Even though he provides detailed instructions for each assignment, they often lack clarity. I needed another professor to explain his instructions.

  • I was expecting the class to be informative + enjoyable, but the class was a nightmare. Average of 4-5 long discussion posts due T-Th every week and 6 long essays. May accuse you of using AI even if he's shown proof of original work. Then, will belittle you and stop responding to your emails. Do not take this class if you struggle with English!

  • Kella G. Svetich: 3.7/5

  • She blamed 1/3 of the class for completely using AI, thereby giving them zeroes. Blamed another 1/3 of the class for using AI to some extent and marked their essays down. Unsupportive, rude, and toxic. SHE DIDN'T USE AN AI CHECKER OR ANY OUTSIDE SOURCE TO VALIDATE HER BASELESS CLAIMS OF PLAGIARISM.
  • She fails to communicate with her students even after I have sent multiple emails about my assignments. Four separate messages asking her to follow up on my assignment and she ignored all of them. Accuses students of using AI without any logical reason or explanation for her actions. Zero care for her students or anyone other than herself.
  • She claimed I used AI when I didn't and gave me 0s. I tried meeting with her on zoom to show my document history and explain my writing. She constantly interrupted and was extremely condescending. Said she would report the "plagiarism" to the student affairs office and I could talk to them. She never reported it so I had no chance to fight my case.
  • Will accuse you of using AI without any proof besides her intuition. She also doesn't teach, there are absolutely ZERO lectures or module material. Only reading from the textbooks and assignments. Also extremely unclear essay prompts. You will learn nothing in this class but it's easy to pass if she doesn't accuse you of using AI
  • It felt overwhelming at times, given there was a lot of reading and writing every week. She doesn't release grades, so I didn't like that I couldn't keep up with my progress and didn't know how to get better. I think seeing your grades is important in knowing how and where to improve and she doesn't give very descriptive feedback.
  • This teacher did not actually teach anything. Each unit consisted of an assigned reading, a multiple-choice quiz, and a 300-word response to a question. There was absolutely no background on anything we read, no lecture nor any actual lesson on why we were reading these selections. We also received 0 feedback on our three essays for the year.
  • I could not recommend NOT taking her enough. Her class was awful. She gave 1000+ word essays every week and there was an insane amount of writing. She gave 0's on so many big assignments for not only me but so many other classmates. She accused the whole class of using AI even when AI had not been used, I wasted hours writing essays to get 0's.
  • in her online async class, we had 3 different 1600-word essays, 3 different 750-word essays, and a weekly 400-word discussion post. Randomly gives 0's because she doesn't feel like grading. She doesn't post any grades for the entire course; you have no idea if you're passing or not. Don't take her!!!!
  • This class wouldn't be able to teach you anything. This class wholly consists of watching "outdated" video material, reading and writing. The submitted essay only gets graded. There is no feedback for it. If you are experienced with Academic writing, this class is an easy A, but if you are not choose other class.

    Richard D. Mills4.6/5

  • I basically didn't do anything for the first 6 weeks of class and he still accepted every assignment for full credit and his grading on essays is very fair and he makes multiple comments to help you understand where you could improve and where you did good. I really enjoyed getting praised for my writing, which I am not used to.

  • 5 essays are a lot, but all the work you do relates to the essays needed for the class. Everything you do is actually needed and overall makes it really easy and clear what he expects. He cares a lot about the students. I once last minute changed my entire essay and he was completely fine and even encouraged me to go outside my comfort zone.
  • I do not enjoy English classes, but Richard is incredible! The homework load is super reasonable and he's an easy grader! He's always willing to help and overall I loved his class 10/10 would recommend!!!
  • Good reading set, great lectures and wholesome reviews. I would definitely recommend this class
  • Love this guy, amazing English professor to take if you're not shy.
  • English was my least favorite subject, but after taking his class, I enjoyed reading and writing essays. He's an excellent teacher and will try to help you improve your reading and writing skills. Be prepared to read and write.
  • Great professor! I was lucky to learn from him! Lots of homework and discussions, he keeps you busy, but you learn a lot! He chooses very interesting topics, so readings are all captivating. Easy grader.

  • Learned a lot from him, he is clear and friendly. Always ready to help students.
  • Professor Mills is one of my favorite teachers at Foothill! He answers quickly and gives helpful feedback during office hours. I would always ask him to meet whenever I want to go over my drafts. Expect lots of reading and writing, but it's worth it for the skills you'll learn. I recommend his class to students who want to learn a lot :)
  • Rachael E. Dworsky:1.4/ 5 Overall Quality Based on 5 ratings Rachael Dworsky

  • I would not recommend this professor at all - she is extremely difficult and she will ALWAYS find something wrong with your work. I dropped her class because even just within the first 2 weeks of class I was drowning in her unnecessary amount of busy work. I don't know how anyone could get an A in this course because she makes it impossible.
  • Caution future students taking Professor Dworsky class. This professor's tough grading, problematic group project structure, and reliance on a narrow set of criteria for evaluation may leave you feeling frustrated and unfairly assessed where the basis of your grade will be on the 3 major essays with minimal opportunities to improve your grade.

  • She will ALWAYS find something wrong with your essay and mark down the score more than it should be. You can write something well for the first essay, and she will give you criticism that seems constructive. You write the second essay the same way with improvements, she will take off points for what she previously said was written well.
  • The professor is not understanding. She does not help and is very unresponsive. She over-assigns papers and grades them harsh and unfairly.
  • Linda D. Janakos: No ratings available.

  • Laurel Peacock: No ratings available.

  • Natalia A. Menendez: No ratings available.

  • Amy D. Reilly: No ratings available.

  • Melissa D. Laptalo: No ratings available.

  • Christine E. Turk: No ratings available.

Among the professors with available ratings, Jordana F. Griffiths and Sherri D. Harvey have the highest overall quality scores at 3.8/5. Students commend Professor Griffiths for her organized lectures and prompt feedback, though they note a substantial workload. Professor Harvey is described as nice, with assignments focused on sustainability and involving group work.

Please note that these ratings are subjective and based on a limited number of student reviews. It's advisable to consider your personal learning preferences and course requirements when selecting a professor.

kindness is the key to longevity

Most mornings, 101-year-old Bea Rudney embraces the day on her patio, pedaling a stationary bike.

“I ride to nowhere,” said the effervescent former nurse, who retired from Kaiser Permanente in 1983 after 35 years.

What is Rudney’s secret to longevity?

Her family says it’s her positive attitude and zest for life.

The glamorous centenarian recently hosted an ice cream social, which has become an annual tradition for more than 40 years at her home in the Oakland hills, nestled in a cluster of redwood trees.

“Our mother inspires our entire family with her youthful mindset, positive attitude, and graciousness,” said Rudney’s son, Eric Rudney. “She always looks forward to seeing friends and family, and she enjoys life to its fullest potential.”

Rudney is in excellent health. She eats well — everything in moderation — and drinks lots of water. Rudney enjoys swimming and daily walks with her friends and family.

She also remains socially connected. She enjoys the rich cultural life of the Bay Area — theater, opera, dance, and music. Rudney has been a member of the League of Women Voters for many years, and she’s a lifelong participant of community organizations that support the elderly and minority groups.

Nursing career started 76 years ago

Rudney was born on March 7, 1923, in New Haven, Conn. After completing her nursing degree at Cornell University-New York Hospital School of Nursing, she married Stan Rudney.

Soon after, the Rudneys moved to Oakland. Rudney was hired as a nurse at the Kaiser Permanente Oakland Medical Center in 1948.

She worked in the outpatient departments, rotating through several clinics and finally becoming the head nurse of the medical clinic. She obtained her master’s degree from University of California, San Francisco. Rudney went on to teach at the Kaiser Permanente School of Nursing, which graduated its last class in 1976.

“I enjoyed working with the young students,” she said. “I loved being a nurse because I enjoyed spending time with the patients and feeling like I was making a difference. Oakland has such a diverse population. We served people from all walks of life, and I really liked that. I met so many interesting people.”

Passing down life lessons

The Rudneys were married for more than 60 years until Stan Rudney passed away in 2015.

Today, Rudney spends as much time as possible with her family. She has three sons, 12 grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren.

Rudney’s granddaughter, Alexis Rudney, said her grandma always makes people feel special and has inspired her to step outside her comfort zone.

“She keeps me calm and grounded,” Alexis Rudney said. “She has also taught me that the things you worry about won’t matter in the long run. She goes with the flow and has inspired me to travel and do so many things. We go on walks every day, and she beats me up the hill!”

Rudney hopes to pass down the life lessons she has learned to the next generation. She sprinkles her words of wisdom with humor and kindness.

“I’ve been really lucky,” she said. “I do have a positive attitude. I always say, ‘Be kind. It takes so much energy to be negative or angry.’”

Eric Rudney wholeheartedly agrees with his mom.

“Seeing the world through my mom’s eyes reminds us that the power of positive thinking leaves the world a better place than we found it.”
