As a consequence, chemo also damages other cells which divide fast (such as cells in bone marrow, hair follicles and cells in the digestive track), and that’s the main cause of the side effects of chemo.
So no, it’s not a fraud, and no, it’s not “poison which hopefully kills the cancer before it kills you.”
It does not kill patients at all (although it might weaken them), and it saves millions of lives on a yearly basis.
It targets certain types of cells, and some “good cells” are hit along the way.
Every once in a while patients refuse surgery and chemo (e.g.) because they decide to either heal through “natural therapies” (meditation, acupuncture, a fruit-only diet — you name it), or “die elegantly” instead of risking to die anyhow while being struck by the side effects of chemo.
Two things happen: (1) as “natural remedies” don’t do a thing to stop cancer cell proliferation, the cancer gets all the elbow room it needs to voraciously spread and feast on the patient’s body, and (2) without medical therapies the patient will eventually become much sicker and suffer much more pain than he or she ever would have through chemo.
By the time the patient realizes that he or she chose the wrong path, it is way too late to do anything anymore.
And without the appropriate palliative care, the patient will be torn apart in the electric mist of cancer pain —
