That’s why you may see an address beginning with something like proofpointisolation.com/browser?.... The real website is usually contained inside that protected URL. For example, if you clicked a FlightAware article, Proofpoint Isolation might be the security layer while FlightAware is the actual destination.


This commonly happens because you’re using a work-managed computer/browser, corporate network, VPN, or a link that went through your employer’s email security system. It does not automatically mean the webpage is dangerous—your organization may isolate many or all external links as a precaution.

Yes, you can use Proofpoint Isolation from your own personal computer if you have access through an organization that licenses it, but it is generally not a normal consumer app that you simply install on your home PC.


Proofpoint describes Isolation as a cloud-based organizational security service. The isolated browser actually runs remotely; potentially dangerous active content executes there, while sanitized content is delivered to your normal browser. Proofpoint says it can work without an endpoint agent or special browser configuration.


So there are two different situations:


Personal computer + your employer/school's Proofpoint account: potentially yes. Your organization can register/authorize your browser or redirect protected links into Proofpoint Isolation.

You personally want to buy/install Proofpoint Isolation just for yourself: Proofpoint currently presents Isolation as an enterprise/customer product rather than a typical individual browser-security subscription. Its licensing terms refer to a customer, users, licenses, and organizational deployments.


If your goal is simply "I want dangerous or unknown websites isolated when I browse on my personal Windows computer," you don't necessarily need Proofpoint. There are easier options for an individual, including using Windows Sandbox/virtual machines or another browser-isolation service.


Proofpoint Browser Isolation overview

 Windows 11, a practical free way to get behavior similar to browser isolation is Windows Sandbox—but it requires Windows 11 Pro, Enterprise, or Education. Windows 11 Home does not normally include it.

If you have Windows 11 Pro

First check Settings → System → About → Windows specifications → Edition.

If it says Windows 11 Pro, you can enable Sandbox:

  1. Press Windows + R.
  2. Type optionalfeatures and press Enter.
  3. Find Windows Sandbox.
  4. Check the box and click OK.
  5. Restart the computer.
  6. Open Start and search Windows Sandbox.
  7. Open Edge inside the Sandbox and browse suspicious/untrusted websites there.

The important advantage is that Sandbox creates a temporary Windows environment

When you close Windows Sandbox, its files, browsing history, installed software, and other changes are discarded.

One important difference from Proofpoint

Proofpoint Browser Isolation: website → Proofpoint's remote/cloud environment → your browser.

Windows Sandbox: website → isolated virtual Windows environment on your own computer.

So it's not exactly the same technology, but for personally opening questionable links, Windows Sandbox provides useful separation from your main Windows installation.

Since you have Windows 11 Home, the built-in Windows Sandbox isn't officially available. You still have several good options for isolating questionable websites.

The easiest approach is to use a virtual machine. Oracle VirtualBox is free and works on Windows 11 Home. You can install a separate Windows or Linux virtual machine and use its browser for suspicious links. If something malicious happens inside the VM, your main Windows installation has an additional layer of separation.

Another option is Microsoft Edge combined with Windows Security and Microsoft Defender SmartScreen. This isn't full browser isolation like Proofpoint, but it's much simpler for everyday browsing and provides phishing/malicious-site protection.

If what you specifically want is Proofpoint-style remote browser isolation, where the website executes on another system rather than your PC, you'd want a cloud/browser-isolation service rather than Windows Sandbox.

For your Windows 11 Home PC, I'd choose VirtualBox + a small Linux VM + Chrome/Firefox for opening websites you don't trust. You can even take a VM snapshot and restore it after browsing.

For Windows 11 Home, I'd set up a separate Ubuntu virtual machine in VirtualBox. It gives you a disposable browser environment without changing your normal Windows installation.

1. Install VirtualBox

Download it directly from Oracle:

Choose Windows hosts, run the installer, and accept the normal installation options. VirtualBox supports Windows 11 x86-64 hosts.

2. Download Ubuntu

Use the official Ubuntu download:

Ubuntu currently offers Ubuntu 26.04 LTS, which has five years of standard security/maintenance updates.

You'll get a large .iso file, approximately:

Don't open the ISO or install Ubuntu over Windows. We're going to put it inside VirtualBox.

3. Create the isolated computer

Open VirtualBox → New.

I'd use approximately:

If your computer only has 8 GB RAM, give the VM about 3–4 GB. If you have 16 GB+, 4–6 GB is comfortable.

Ubuntu itself recommends at least 6 GB system memory and 25 GB disk space for a normal desktop installation.

4. Important security settings

After Ubuntu is installed, shut down the VM and open:

VirtualBox → Safe Browser → Settings

For a VM specifically intended for questionable websites, I recommend keeping integration with your real PC limited:

General → Advanced

  • Shared Clipboard → Disabled
  • Drag'n'Drop → Disabled

Don't create shared folders between Ubuntu and Windows.

For networking, leave:

Network → Adapter 1 → NAT

You generally don't need Bridged Adapter just for isolated web browsing.

5. Browse inside the VM

Start Safe Browser.

Open Firefox inside Ubuntu and visit the questionable webpage there instead of opening it in your normal Windows browser.

Conceptually you'll have:

Your Windows 11 PC

VirtualBox

Ubuntu VM

Firefox

🌐 questionable website

The website is therefore interacting primarily with the Ubuntu VM rather than your everyday Windows environment.

6. Make it disposable

An even better setup is to create a VirtualBox snapshot once Ubuntu is updated and configured.

Call it something like:

Clean Browser

Then you can browse → shut down → restore the clean snapshot before your next questionable browsing session.

This is useful because you aren't relying on the VM remaining clean forever.

One caution

This provides stronger separation than simply opening an Incognito/InPrivate window, but it isn't identical to Proofpoint Isolation. Proofpoint can execute web content remotely on infrastructure outside your computer, whereas your VirtualBox VM still executes the website on your physical computer, inside a virtualized environment.

Also, don't use the isolated VM to sign into your important banking, primary email, or password-manager accounts while you're investigating a suspicious website.
